This indenture made this twenty third day of February in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty two, between John GILLIAM and Mary his wife, of the county of Powhatan and state of Virginia of the one part and Thomas O. Taylor and William G. Nice of the county of Powhatan and state of aforesaid on the other part; witnesseth that the said John GILLIAM and Mary his wife for and in consideration of a desire to secure the faithful payment of the sum of eleven thousand an ninety dollars which will be due and payable to Edward Johnson of the County of Powhatan as hereafter described in the deed of indenture and also in consideration of one dollar and cash in hand paid the said John GILLIAM and Mary, his wife at or before the sealing and delivery of these present doth grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said Thomas O. Taylor and William G. Nice their heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Powhatan aforesaid and being a part of the tract of land known by the name of Maidens Adventure the limits and boundaries of which are particularly described in a deed of Indenture from said Edward Johnson and Caroline his wife to said John GILLIAM, bearing date the same day and year with this instrument, which is hereby referred to containing seven hundred and twenty four (724) acres: to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of lands with the messauges, houses, buildings and all other appurtenances thereto belonging unto the said Thomas O. Taylor and William G. Nice, their heirs and assigns forever and the said John GILLIAM and Mary his wife do for themselves their heirs forever warrant and defend a good and sufficient right and title of the tract of lands aforesaid unto the said Thomas O. Taylor and William G. Nice, their heirs and assigns forever upon Trust never the less to answer the following purposes to wit that whereas the aforesaid John GILLIAM stands justly indebted to the aforesaid Edward Johnson the following sums due by bond to with one bond for five thousand, five hundred and forty five dollars payable 1st January 1823 and one other bond for five thousand five hundred five hundred and forty five and dollars payable 1st January 1824. Now of the said John GILLIAM, his heirs, etc. shall well and faithfully pay the above described bonds unto the said Edward Johnson and his etc. as they shall become due and payable then and in the case their forgoing indenture shall become null and void but in case of failure thereof or any part thereof it shall and may be the said Thomas O. Taylor and William G. Nice or either of them or the survivor or survivors of either of them are hereby directed to advertise the aforesaid tract of land in some newspaper printed in the City of Richmond, giving ninety days notice the time and place of the sale of the same and sell the same for the best price that can be obtained at auction for ready money or so much thereof as will raise a sufficient sum in cash in the first place to defray all the expense incurred in carrying this trust deed into full effect and in the next place pay the debt or debts aforesaid that may be then due to the said Edward Johnson and lastly, the surplus should there be any into the hands of the said John GILLIAM or to any other person legally authorized to receive the same: In witness where of the parties hath hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals the day and year first in this indenture written

Powhatan County, to wit;
We William Ligon and James M. Harris, Justices of the Peace of said County and state of Virginia do hereby certify that Mary GILLIAM wife of John GILLIAM, parties to a deed of trust conveying real estate to Thomas P[?]. Taylor and William G. Nice, bearing date 23 day of February 1822 and hereon annexed, personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband and having the deed aforesaid fully explained to her, she, the said Mary GILLIAM, acknowledged the same to be her act and deed, sealed and acknowledged the same and that she did not wish to retract it given under our hands and seals this 23rd day of February 1822
